Best Free Invoice Software for Contractors in 2026
Full disclosure: We built EasyNest. We've tried to be fair and honest about every tool in this list, including our own strengths and weaknesses.
If you're a contractor, builder, plumber, electrician, or any kind of tradesperson, you need a way to send invoices and get paid. But most invoicing software is built for accountants, not for people who spend their day on a job site.
We tested five free invoicing tools and compared them based on what actually matters to contractors: simplicity, PDF quality, quote-to-invoice workflow, and mobile usability.
What contractors actually need
Before we compare tools, let's be clear about what most contractors need from invoicing software:
- Create a quote, send it, get it approved
- Convert that quote into an invoice
- Generate a professional PDF with company branding and banking details
- Track who's paid and who hasn't
- Do all of this quickly, ideally from a phone
What they generally don't need: expense tracking, payroll, inventory management, recurring invoices, multi-entity accounting, or bank reconciliation. Those features are useful for accountants but they add complexity that gets in the way.

1. EasyNest
Best for: Contractors and tradespeople who want simplicity.
EasyNest was built specifically for builders and small businesses. The workflow is straightforward: add your company details and banking info once, add your customers, create quotes, convert them to invoices, and download branded PDFs.
What we like (yes, we're biased):
- Simplest interface of all five tools
- Quote-to-invoice conversion in one click
- Banking details and VAT automatically included on every PDF
- Customer name included in document numbers (e.g. INV-0012 (Smith Renovations))
- Revenue dashboard showing paid, outstanding, and overdue amounts
- 30+ currencies supported
- Free plan available, no credit card required
What's missing (being honest):
- No native mobile app yet (works well in mobile browser)
- No recurring invoices
- No expense tracking
- No time tracking
- Limited to 5 quotes and 5 invoices per month on the free plan
Price: Free plan forever. Pro is ~$9/month for unlimited everything.
2. Wave
Best for: Freelancers who need free unlimited invoicing with no quote workflow.
Wave is genuinely free for invoicing with no limits on the number of invoices. It's been around for years and is reliable. However, it doesn't support quotes at all, which is a dealbreaker for most contractors.
What we like:
- Truly free with unlimited invoices
- Clean, modern interface
- Expense tracking and basic accounting included
- Receipt scanning on mobile
What's missing:
- No quoting functionality at all
- No banking details on invoices (you have to add them manually in notes)
- Limited to USD, CAD, and a few other currencies
- Ads on the free plan
- Now owned by H&R Block, future uncertain
Price: Free forever for invoicing. Payments processing costs extra.
3. Invoice Ninja
Best for: Tech-savvy users who want maximum customisation.
Invoice Ninja is open source and powerful. It has more features than most contractors will ever use, which is both its strength and weakness. The interface can be overwhelming if you just want to send a quick quote.
What we like:
- Open source with self-hosting option
- Very feature-rich (proposals, recurring invoices, time tracking)
- Extensive customisation
- Good API
What's missing:
- Steep learning curve
- Interface is cluttered for simple use cases
- Free plan is quite limited
- Self-hosting requires technical knowledge
- Not built with trades/construction in mind
Price: Free plan available. Pro is $10/month.
4. Zoho Invoice
Best for: Businesses already using the Zoho ecosystem.
Zoho Invoice is solid and well-designed. It integrates with the rest of Zoho's business suite (CRM, Books, Inventory). If you're already using Zoho, it makes sense. If you're not, there's a learning curve.
What we like:
- Professional templates
- Good automation features
- Time tracking built in
- Client portal where customers can view and pay invoices
What's missing:
- Free plan limited to 5 clients (same as EasyNest)
- Part of a larger ecosystem that can feel complex
- No banking details on PDFs without customisation
- Overkill for a one-person operation
- Can feel slow on older devices
Price: Free plan (5 clients). Paid plans from $9/month.
5. FreshBooks
Best for: Service businesses that need time tracking and project management.
FreshBooks is one of the most popular invoicing tools globally. It's well-designed and easy to use. The biggest downside is there's no real free plan, just a 30-day trial.
What we like:
- Very polished interface
- Excellent time tracking
- Good mobile apps
- Proposals and estimates included
- Client portal
What's missing:
- No free plan (starts at $17/month after trial)
- Expensive compared to alternatives
- More features than most contractors need
- Not tailored to construction or trades
Price: 30-day free trial. Lite plan starts at $17/month.
So which one should you choose?
It depends on what matters most to you:
- Want the simplest option for quotes and invoices? EasyNest. Built for contractors, minimal learning curve. Read our guide on how to send your first invoice to get started.
- Need free unlimited invoicing without quotes? Wave. Hard to beat on price for pure invoicing.
- Want maximum features and don't mind complexity? Invoice Ninja. Open source and very capable.
- Already using Zoho products? Zoho Invoice. Integrates naturally.
- Budget isn't a concern and you need time tracking? FreshBooks. Premium experience at a premium price.
For most contractors and tradespeople who just need to quote, invoice, and get paid, the simpler the tool the better. Anything you don't use is just clutter in your way.
