Wave is genuinely free for invoicing with no limits on the number of invoices. It's been around for years and is reliable. However, it doesn't support quotes at all, which is a dealbreaker for most contractors.

What we like:

• Truly free with unlimited invoices
• Clean, modern interface
• Expense tracking and basic accounting included
• Receipt scanning on mobile

What's missing:

• No quoting functionality at all
• No banking details on invoices (you have to add them manually in notes)
• Limited to USD, CAD, and a few other currencies
• Ads on the free plan
• Now owned by H&R Block, future uncertain

3. Invoice Ninja

Best for: Tech-savvy users who want maximum customisation.

Invoice Ninja is open source and powerful. It has more features than most contractors will ever use, which is both its strength and weakness. The interface can be overwhelming if you just want to send a quick quote.

• Very feature-rich (proposals, recurring invoices, time tracking)
• Extensive customisation
• Good API

What's missing:

• Steep learning curve
